How to Cite a Website in APA

Use the following format and punctuation:

Author last name, First initial. Title of the article. Retrieved November 4, 2020 from www.psu.edu/un/about.html

Example:   Carmona, R. H. (2004, March 2). The Growing epidemic of childhood obesity. Retrieved from http://www.hhs.gov/asl/testify/t040302.html  

Helpful information about creating your website citation:

  1. If you cannot locate a date for the article use (n.d.) for no date.
  2.  If there is no author, start the entry with the title of the document.
  3. If there is no article title, use the title of the website. Put the title of the website in italics.

What you will need:

  • Authors name – the author’s name can be a corporation or an organization.  If name is given, start your citation with the title of the article.
  • Date – put it in parenthesis. If there is no date type n.d.
  • Title of the article – Capitalize only the first word of the title. Italicize.
  • Date you accessed information
  • URL (web address) 

How to cite a journal article found online

Use this format:

Last name, F. M., & Last name, F. M. (Year). Title of article. Title of Periodical, Vol.(Issue), page numbers. Retrieval date, URL.

Perreault, L. (2019). Obesity in adults: Role of physical activity and exercise. UpToDate. Retrieved January 12, 2020, from https://www.uptodate.com/contents/obesity-in-adults-role-of-physical-activity-and-exercise.

  1. Retrieval dates are required for articles found on the web.  Make sure you include correct punctuation and italicize when needed.

  2. If you can not locate a date for the article use (n.d.) for no date.
  3.  If there is no author, start the entry with the title of the document.

How to cite a journal article from a database

Most databases provide a proper citation for their source. Select the Cite link on your article's page. Make sure to select the APA citation style. Either copy and paste the citation to your paper or export the citation to your Noodletools account.

How to cite a figure

Figures  

Figures are charts, graphs, photographs or drawings.

Give the Figure a number and a title with a caption below the figure that serves as title and a brief description. In the text, refer to all figures by their number. You MUST include a full citation for the figure in your Reference sheet.

How to cite a table in APA

Tables

Tables show numerical values in columns or rows.

In the text, refer to all tables  by their number. Ex:  as shown in table 8, the responses……

Give the table a number and a brief but clear and explanatory title above the table. Italicize the title.  Place a note under the table. Include the citation for the source, use commas instead of periods to separate your information.  You must also include this information in the Reference page. Tables and Figures are listed separtatly on the Reference page.

Cite the table in the Reference page as follows:

Simon, H.B. (2002). The Harvard Medical School Guide to Men’s Health. New York: Free Press.

Reference Page

See what your Reference page should look like. The Reference page should:

  • Be the last page of your paper with the words Reference centered at the top of the page.
  • Be listed in alphabetical order
  • The second line of a citation should begin with a hanging indent
